Jimmie, played by Chris O'Donnell, is a carefree man who hasn't given much thought to settling down. His girlfriend Anne, played by Renee Zellweger, is a journalist who is focused on her career and not interested in marriage. However, after catching the bouquet at their friend's wedding, Anne begins to see marriage as a possibility.
Jimmie's botched proposal leaves Anne feeling insulted and hurt, causing her to leave town on a work assignment. This is when Jimmie discovers the stipulation in his grandfather's will - he must be married by 6:05 pm on his 30th birthday or receive none of the inheritance.
With no sign of Anne, Jimmie embarks on a mission to find a wife before the deadline. He tracks down his ex-girlfriends, including a feminist activist, an artist, and a wealthy socialite, but none are interested in marrying him. Along the way, Jimmie starts to realize the value of marriage and the importance of having someone to share his life with.
