The movie follows Amelia, a single mother struggling to cope with the death of her husband in a car accident on the day their son, Samuel, was born. Samuel is now seven years old and is convinced that a monster called the Babadook is lurking in their house. Amelia initially dismisses his fears as childish imagination, but strange events start happening around the house, and Samuel's behavior becomes increasingly erratic and violent.
As Amelia's own mental state starts to deteriorate due to sleep deprivation and stress, she begins to experience terrifying visions and encounters with the Babadook herself. The monster gradually reveals itself as a manifestation of Amelia's grief, guilt, and repressed emotions over her husband's death, and it slowly starts to consume her.
Amelia struggles to protect herself and Samuel from the malevolent force of the Babadook, but she eventually realizes that she must confront and acknowledge her deepest fears and emotions in order to defeat it. In a climactic confrontation with the monster, Amelia manages to overcome her own inner demons and find a sense of closure and peace, allowing her to move forward with her life and rebuild her relationship with her son.
