The Astronaut's Wife is a 1999 science fiction thriller film directed by Rand Ravich and starring Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron. Spencer Armacost (Depp), an astronaut, and his partner Alex Streck (Nick Cassavetes) are on a space mission when they encounter a mysterious explosion that cuts off communication with Earth. Spencer survives, but Alex is lost in space.
Upon his return to Earth, Spencer resigns from NASA and takes a desk job to appreciate time with his wife Jillian (Theron). Before long, however, Jillian realizes that Spencer's behavior has changed drastically—he is moody, cold, and distant. When she discovers she is pregnant, she hopes that the baby will bring them closer together. But as Spencer becomes more secretive and paranoid, Jillian begins to fear for her safety and that of her unborn child.
The couple's close friend Nan (Donna Murphy), a doctor, notices that Spencer's physical and psychological condition is deteriorating rapidly, but he dismisses her concerns. Meanwhile, strange occurrences happen around the couple, and when Jillian investigates, she finds out that Alex's widow has been experiencing the same symptoms as Spencer.
Jillian eventually uncovers the horrifying truth: Spencer and Alex had been possessed by an alien entity while in space, and only Spencer was able to return to Earth. The alien presence in Spencer's body has been manipulating him, and now that he is expecting a child, it plans to pass on its legacy. Jillian realizes she must fight for her life and that of her child's as the entity tries to take over Spencer's body completely.
The Astronaut's Wife received mixed reviews from critics but was praised for its visual style and performances by Depp and Theron. The film's suspenseful plot and eerie tone have made it a cult classic among sci-fi fans.
