Laurel Ayres is portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg, who delivers a brilliant performance as a strong-willed, intelligent, and ambitious woman trying to make it in the male-dominated world of finance. Laurel faces numerous obstacles, both personal and professional, in her quest for success.
After leaving her job at the investment firm, Laurel starts her own company. She soon realizes that in order to gain the trust of potential clients, she needs to pretend she has a male partner, Robert Cutty. To add credibility to her made-up partner, she creates a fictitious background and even signs his name on the company letterhead.
Although Laurel's business begins to thrive, she soon finds herself in a compromising situation when all her clients want to meet her partner, Robert Cutty. Desperate to keep her deception going, Laurel enlists the help of a struggling actor named Frank (Dianne Wiest) to portray her fictional partner, but soon the ruse becomes more and more difficult to maintain.
As the pressure mounts, Laurel finds herself on the verge of being exposed and must find a way to salvage her business and her reputation.
