The Aspern Papers is a film adaptation of Henry James' novella of the same name. It tells the story of Morton Vint, a young writer who travels to Venice to seek out the unpublished love letters of Jeffrey Aspern, a famous 19th-century poet. Aspern's mistress, Juliana Bordereau, is the only person who has possession of the letters. She lives in a dilapidated palace with her niece, Miss Tina.
Morton manages to secure lodgings in the same house as the two women and sets out to charm them into handing over the letters. He poses as a student of Juliana's dead husband in order to gain her trust. He also finds himself falling in love with Miss Tina, who is a strong-willed and independent woman.
As Morton's pursuit of the letters becomes more obsessive, tensions rise between him and the two women. Juliana, in particular, becomes increasingly suspicious of his motives and refuses to give him the letters. She believes they are priceless and wants to keep them hidden from the world.
The film explores themes of passion, obsession, and the destructive nature of greed. It also examines the relationship between artists and their work and the lengths that people will go to in order to possess a piece of history.
