The Ascent is a 1977 Soviet war drama film directed by Larisa Shepitko. The film follows Sotnikov and Rybak, two partisans fighting against the German occupation during World War II. They are a part of a larger group of partisans who are struggling to survive in the harsh winter conditions of Belarus.

One day, Sotnikov and Rybak are sent on a mission to find food for their group. They come across a farm, but the Germans have already seized it. The two partisans are captured and tortured by the German soldiers. Sotnikov is brutally beaten and Rybak is forced to watch.

Despite the torture, Sotnikov does not reveal any information about his comrades. The Germans decide to execute Sotnikov as an example to the other villagers. Rybak is given a choice to denounce his partisan activities and join the German army or be executed with Sotnikov.

Rybak initially decides to join the Germans to save his own life but ultimately chooses to stand with his fellow partisan and is executed alongside him. The film ends with the remaining members of the partisan band mourning their loss.

The Ascent is a powerful and haunting film that explores the themes of sacrifice, loyalty, and the human condition during times of war. It won the Golden Bear award at the 27th Berlin International Film Festival.
