The Americanization of Emily is a 1964 comedy-drama film directed by Arthur Hiller and starring James Garner and Julie Andrews. The film is set in London in 1944, during the build-up to D-Day. Charlie Madison, a lieutenant in the US Navy, is the assistant to Admiral William Jessup, a hard-nosed officer who wants to be the first American admiral to set foot on the beaches of Normandy.
Charlie has a reputation for being able to get his men anything they want, from extra rations to French wine. He is also a womanizer, believing that sex is the only pleasure in life and that women should be used as much as possible. He meets a young English woman named Emily Barham, who works for the British War Office.
At first, Emily is repelled by Charlie's behavior and attitudes, but she soon falls in love with him. Charlie, on the other hand, begins to question his own beliefs and values, especially when his commanding officer suffers a nervous breakdown and Charlie is sent on a dangerous and meaningless mission to retrieve the first dog killed in action for the admiral's dog-loving wife.
The film is a satirical look at war, patriotism, and masculinity. It challenges traditional notions of heroism and shows the true cost of war on individuals and society. The Americanization of Emily was well-received by critics and audiences alike and is considered one of James Garner's finest performances.
