The Alamo is a historical drama directed by John Lee Hancock, released in 2004. The film tells the story of the Battle of the Alamo which took place from February 23 to March 6, 1836, during the Texas Revolution.

The film follows the Texans and Tejanos who are garrisoned in the Alamo, an old Spanish mission which has been converted into a military fort. The defenders, led by Colonel William Travis (played by Patrick Wilson), James Bowie (Jason Patric), and frontiersman Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), know they are vastly outnumbered by the Mexican army led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarría).

Upon arriving at the Alamo, Santa Anna orders the Texans to surrender, but Travis responds with a cannon blast, declaring that they will fight to the death. Over the course of several days, the Texans and Tejanos hold off wave after wave of Mexican attacks, but they are eventually overwhelmed.

The film includes several subplots, including the relationship between Bowie and his estranged wife, and the clashes between Travis and Crockett. It also portrays the Mexican perspective, showing Santa Anna's political ambitions and the tensions between him and his general, José Enrique de la Peña (Jordi Mollà).

The Alamo received mixed reviews and was a box office disappointment, but it remains a popular portrayal of the battle. The film's accuracy has been questioned by some historians, particularly in regards to the depiction of the defenders' motivations and the historical context of the battle.
