The Air I Breathe is a 2007 American crime thriller film directed and written by Jieho Lee and Bob DeRosa. The film is loosely based on the Chinese proverb that divides one's life into four elements and explores the interconnecting lives of four characters who are deeply affected by these emotions.
The film opens with an icy-hearted businessman, played by Forest Whitaker, who becomes obsessed with a high-stakes horse race and puts his life on the line. Brendan Fraser plays a man named Pleasure who works for a ruthless crime boss named Fingers (played by Andy Garcia), who assigns him to a dangerous task to collect a debt owed by a pop star named Trista (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar). However, things go wrong, and Trista is kidnapped and held for ransom. Alongside, there is a doctor named Love played by Kevin Bacon who is desperately trying to save the life of his wife, who has been in a coma for months.
As their lives continue to intertwine, each character discovers what it means to have happiness, pleasure, sorrow, and love.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Emile Hirsch, Julie Delpy, Kelly Hu, and John Cho in supporting roles. It received mixed to negative reviews from critics, despite the impressive cast. However, it is still considered an underrated gem and a thought-provoking film that examines the human condition.
