The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a 1926 German animated film by Lotte Reiniger. Known for being the oldest surviving feature-length animated film, it is a true masterpiece of early animation.
The film tells the story of Prince Achmed, who is tricked by a wicked sorcerer into mounting a flying horse made of wood, which the sorcerer claims will take him to the ends of the earth. The prince is hesitant, but the sorcerer persuades him, and as soon as Prince Achmed mounts the horse, it takes off, soaring high above the clouds.
As Prince Achmed flies through the skies, he encounters a series of magical beings and creatures, including Aladdin, the Witch of the Fiery Mountains, and a host of demons. Along the way, he falls in love with the beautiful Princess Peri Banu, who is guarded by a giant. To win her heart, he must fight off an army of demons in a stunning battle sequence that showcases Reiniger's skill with silhouette animation.
The film was created using a technique called "silhouette animation," in which paper cutouts are manipulated frame by frame to create the illusion of movement. The result is a stunning visual style that is both haunting and enchanting, with intricate details and a sense of otherworldly beauty.
