The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother is a comedy film written and directed by Gene Wilder, who also stars as the titular character - Consulting Detective Sigerson Holmes. The film takes place in the late 19th century London, and follows Sigerson, who has always lived in the shadow of his famous brother Sherlock Holmes (played by Douglas Wilmer), finally getting a chance to step out of it and solve a case on his own.
The case involves a mysterious woman named Jenny Hill (played by Madeline Kahn), who has in her possession a document that could prove crucial in the peace negotiations between England and France. The document, however, is stolen from her and Sigerson is hired to retrieve it. He is aided in his mission by a bumbling Scotland Yard inspector named Lestrade (played by Thorley Walters).
As Sigerson delves deeper into the case, he encounters an array of colorful characters, including the opera singer Eduardo Gambetti (played by Dom DeLuise), who has a penchant for cross-dressing and exposing his backside; a master of disguise named Signor Rossi (played by George Silver); and a villainous figure named Moriarty (played by Leo McKern).
The film is filled with slapstick humor, witty dialogue, and spoof elements, with Wilder's performance as the hapless but clever Sigerson being a standout. The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother is a fun and lighthearted take on the iconic detective genre, with plenty of laughs and surprises along the way.
