Macon Leary, played by William Hurt, is a highly respected travel writer who has made a career out of reviewing hotels and restaurants for people who hate to travel. He is meticulously organized and has created a life for himself that is predictable and safe. Macon's world is rocked when his son Ethan is killed in a random act of violence. The tragedy threatens to crush Macon's spirit and leaves him feeling numb to everything around him.
Macon's wife, played by Kathleen Turner, is also struggling to come to terms with their son's death. She suggests that they separate because she feels that they have lost their connection and are unable to help each other through their grief. Macon agrees to the separation and rents a small apartment, where he can be alone with his thoughts.
While on a business trip, Macon meets a quirky and outgoing woman named Muriel, played by Geena Davis. Muriel owns a dog training business and is immediately drawn to Macon's reserved demeanor. Macon is initially put off by Muriel's forwardness, but he finds that he is comforted by her presence and begins to rely on her for emotional support.
Muriel encourages Macon to embrace life again and take risks. She invites him to attend a local dog training class where he meets a colorful group of people, including a blind man who teaches Macon to dance and a woman who recites poetry. Macon starts to feel more alive and connected to the world around him.
Meanwhile, Macon's wife begins to question her decision to split up with Macon. She realizes that she still loves him and wants to make their marriage work. Macon is torn between his love for Muriel and his desire to salvage his relationship with his wife.
The movie explores themes of grief, loss, and the transformative power of love. The Accidental Tourist is a poignant and touching film that showcases the talents of some of Hollywood's most gifted actors.
