The 3 Penny Opera, also known as Die Dreigroschenoper in German, is a musical film directed by G.W. Pabst and released in 1931. The film is based on the play of the same name by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, which itself was inspired by John Gay's 18th-century ballad opera, The Beggar's Opera.

The story is set in Victorian London and follows the exploits of the notorious criminal Macheath, also known as Mack the Knife, who is wanted by the police for his various crimes. Mack is in love with Polly Peachum, daughter of the wealthy and influential beggar king, Jonathan Peachum. Despite the objections of her father, Polly marries Mack in a secret ceremony.

Meanwhile, Peachum plots to have Mack arrested and hanged, hoping to profit from his execution by selling admission to the public. He enlists the help of his corrupted police connections and Mack's former lover, Jenny, who agrees to betray him.

As the plot thickens, the characters navigate through their own moral ambiguities and allegiances, revealing the dark underbelly of London's society. The themes of poverty, corruption, and exploitation are central in the film, as well as the exploration of the true nature of criminality, morality, and authority.

The film is known for its iconic musical numbers, including "Mack the Knife" and "The Ballad of the Drowned Girl", which were composed by Kurt Weill and written by Brecht. The film was a critical success and contributed greatly to the popularity of the play and its music.
