Lineage of Vengeance: A Peasant's Payback

Drama,Romance  France,United Kingdom

Based on Thomas Hardy's novel "Tess of the D’urbervilles," Tess is a 1979 British-French drama film directed by Roman Polanski. The film follows the story of Tess, a young girl from a poor family who is sent by her father to seek assistance from a rich family, the D'urbervilles.

The D'urbervilles initially welcome Tess and offer her a job as a milkmaid on their farm. However, as Tess's beauty and charm become apparent, Alec D'urberville, the son of the family, begins to pursue her relentlessly. Despite Tess's initial reluctance, she eventually becomes involved with Alec, leading to a sexual relationship and ultimately unwanted pregnancy.

Following this, the film takes a turn as Tess attempts to rebuild her life, leaving behind the D'urbervilles and meeting Angel Clare, a young man who falls in love with her despite her past. However, Tess's past soon catches up with her, leading to a tragedy that forces Tess to confront the harsh realities of class, societal expectations, and the limitations of her own agency.

The film stars Nastassja Kinski in the lead role, alongside Peter Firth, Leigh Lawson, and John Bett. Its themes of sexual awakening, class struggle, and female victimization have made it a classic of its genre, earning critical acclaim and numerous award nominations, including three wins at the 1980 Academy Awards.
