Tesla is a biographical drama film directed by Michael Almereyda and released in 2020. The film depicts the life and struggles of Nikola Tesla, a brilliant inventor and engineer who is hailed as a genius but whose visionary ideas are often dismissed and ridiculed by his contemporaries.
The film explores Tesla's early days as a technician in New York, where he first crosses paths with Thomas Edison, the famous inventor and businessman who becomes both his inspiration and his rival. Tesla is initially hired by Edison to improve his DC motors, but the two clash over their differing philosophies on electricity and power.
Undeterred by Edison's criticism, Tesla strikes out on his own and begins developing his own ideas, including the alternating current (AC) system, which would revolutionize the way electricity is distributed and consumed. However, even with the backing of wealthy investor George Westinghouse, Tesla faces further obstacles, as his nemesis Edison begins a smear campaign against AC, using dangerous public demonstrations to portray it as unsafe and unreliable.
Through it all, Tesla remains committed to his lifelong dream of harnessing the power of the universe to create a global system of wireless energy, which he believes will bring unlimited energy to the world and transform human society. But as his health deteriorates and his finances dwindle, Tesla must confront the harsh reality of his Promethean ambitions and ask himself whether his inventions will truly bring about the utopian future he envisions.
