Terri is a coming-of-age drama-comedy movie that explores the theme of self-discovery, acceptance, and personal growth. The movie centers around the life of Terri (played by Jacob Wysocki), an overweight teenager who struggles to fit in at school and deal with the recent death of his parents. His only close bond is with his Uncle James (played by Creed Bratton), who lives with him.
Terri spends most of his time in his pajamas, sleeping in class, and avoiding social interaction. However, his life takes a turn when Mr. Fitzgerald (played by John C. Reilly), his assistant principal, shows an interest in him and starts offering him support and guidance. Mr. Fitzgerald takes Terri under his wing, and together they embark on a journey of self-discovery, as Terri learns to engage with the world around him and find his place in it.
Throughout the movie, we see Terri line up a series of rite-of-passage experiences that bring him out of his shell. He attends a school dance, where he meets a fellow outcast, Chad (played by Bridger Zadina), and they bond over their shared struggles. Terri also tries out for the school’s track team, where he develops a friendship with Heather (played by Olivia Crocicchia), a popular girl who shows him kindness and acceptance.
As Terri learns to overcome his fear of rejection and embrace his authentic self, he grows immensely as a person. The movie ends with Terri graduating from school, ready to face the future armed with confidence, independence, and a newfound sense of purpose. Terri is a touching and heartwarming film that reinforces the transformative power of positive relationships and growth mindset.
