After bonding over their mutual love for rock music, JB and KG (played by actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass respectively) form the band Tenacious D in Venice Beach. They dream of becoming the world's greatest rock band, but struggle to find success until they learn about a legendary guitar pick that has magical powers, capable of helping them achieve their musical dreams.
Determined to find the pick, they embark on a road trip to a rock-and-roll museum in order to steal it. Along the way, they encounter strange characters, including a hitchhiking Sasquatch and a bar full of biker gangs. They also face obstacles such as being arrested and having to break out of jail.
When they finally reach the museum, they successfully steal the pick, but are pursued by a security guard (played by comedian and actor, Dave Grohl) who is revealed to be Satan himself. They engage in a rock-off with Satan, using the magical pick to outperform him and win the battle.
In the end, JB and KG achieve their dream of becoming famous rock stars, but realize that the real power of music lies in the passion and love for rock itself. The movie features various original songs performed by Tenacious D, which range from comedic to sincere rock ballads.
