In Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Leanne (played by Katie Holmes) is a high school student with her sights set on attending Harvard University. However, she is not the valedictorian, a position held by her rival, Trudie Tucker (played by Liz Stauber). To secure her scholarship to Harvard, Leanne must become the valedictorian.
Leanne's nemesis in this endeavor is her history teacher, Mrs. Tingle (played by Helen Mirren), who not only dislikes her but seems to take pleasure in failing her. Desperate to improve her grade, Leanne and her friends Luke (played by Barry Watson) and Jo Lynn (played by Marisa Coughlan) break into Mrs. Tingle's home to steal the history final exam. However, things quickly spiral out of control when Mrs. Tingle catches them in the act.
What follows is a tense, suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse between the three students and Mrs. Tingle, who uses their desperate situation to manipulate and control them. As the stakes get higher and higher, the students are forced to confront their own morals and values, and ultimately must decide what they are willing to do to achieve their goals.
Teaching Mrs. Tingle was directed by Kevin Williamson, best known for his work on teen dramas like Dawson's Creek and Scream. The movie received mixed reviews upon its release in 1999, but is now considered a cult classic of its genre.
