Return to the Jungle: Tarzan's Temptation

Drama,Adventure,Action  United States of America

Tarzan and His Mate is a 1934 American adventure film directed by Cedric Gibbons, Jack Conway, and James C. McKay. It is the second installment of the Tarzan film series and stars Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan and Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane. The film follows the couple as they fend off poachers looking for ivory, but their friendship with former safari guide d'Iberville (Paul Cavanagh) and his girlfriend Rokoff (Natalie Kingston) is threatened when Holt (Neil Hamilton) convinces d'Iberville to lead them to the elephants. As tensions rise, d'Iberville shoots and kills a native, causing the tribe to become hostile to the expedition. Meanwhile, Marlin Arlington (Neil Hamilton), Holt's friend, tries to seduce Jane. When Jane eventually succumbs to Marlin's charms, Tarzan is left heartbroken and alone. The film's climax finds Tarzan racing to save Jane from a tribe of hostile natives while the other humans struggle to fend them off. Tarzan and His Mate was notable for its pioneering use of underwater photography, which was uncommon in 1934. The film also features footage of real elephants and lions, which was rare at the time. Despite its success, the film was controversial for its sexually suggestive scenes and was heavily censored in some countries.
