Lost and Found: Parents' Liberation

Music,Comedy,Drama  United States of America

Taking Off is a 1971 American comedy-drama film directed by Miloš Forman and written by Forman, John Guare, and Jean-Claude Carrière. The film stars Lynn Carlin and Buck Henry as a New York City couple searching for their runaway daughter, played by Linnea Heacock.

As Larry and Lyne search for their daughter, they attend an impromptu meeting for parents of runaway children. The meeting becomes a support group of sorts as the parents share their experiences and insights. Larry and Lyne soon become friendly with the other parents, sharing in their mutual frustration and grief.

Meanwhile, Jeannie has joined a group of young hippies, living in a rundown apartment filled with drugs, free love, and music. She finds a sense of community and belonging among these people, but as she becomes accustomed to the lifestyle, she begins to question its value.

Throughout the film, Larry and Lyne venture into unfamiliar territory, trying drugs, attending an African drumming circle, and even taking a nude art class. They rediscover a sense of adventure and spontaneity that has been missing from their lives.

Taking Off is notable for its use of music, including performances by the newly-formed band, The Eagles, as well as contributions from a number of other musicians, including Carly Simon and Kathy Bates.

The film was a critical success, praised for its exploration of generational conflict and its depiction of the counterculture of the 1970s. It won the Grand Prix at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival.
