Tabu is a Portuguese movie directed by Miguel Gomes. Pilar is a middle-aged woman living in Lisbon who befriends her elderly neighbour Aurora. Aurora is a wealthy and eccentric woman who enjoys gambling and watching old films. One day, Aurora dies suddenly, and Pilar becomes curious about the woman's past. Pilar discovers that Aurora was once a young woman living in Africa during the colonial era. Aurora fell in love with a Portuguese man named Ventura, but their relationship was forbidden by society and Aurora's family. The two lovers were separated, and Ventura was sent back to Portugal. Aurora was then forced to marry another man, who was abusive towards her. Aurora eventually had a nervous breakdown and was sent to a mental hospital. Pilar becomes obsessed with learning about Aurora's past and begins to imagine herself in Aurora's story. The film is divided into two parts, "Paradise Lost" and "Paradise," which represent Aurora's tragic love story and Pilar's imagined version of the story, respectively. The film explores themes of love, loss, and memory, and combines elements of drama and surrealism.
