In Switchback, FBI agent Frank LaCrosse (played by Dennis Quaid) is on the hunt for a serial killer who has been terrorizing rural areas in the western United States. When LaCrosse's own young son goes missing while they are on a hunting trip together, the agent becomes even more determined to catch the killer and save his child.
As LaCrosse follows the trail of the killer, he teams up with a young hitchhiker named Lane Dixon (Jared Leto) who may have information about the murderer's whereabouts. Together, the two men navigate the treacherous terrain of the western wilderness while trying to avoid being caught by the killer.
Meanwhile, back in Washington D.C., LaCrosse's boss, FBI Director Jack Cross (R. Lee Ermey), is pressuring the agent to return to the city and help with another high-profile case. But LaCrosse remains focused on finding his son and bringing the killer to justice.
As the hunt for the murderer intensifies, the tension between LaCrosse and Dixon grows as the young hitchhiker becomes more and more erratic. But as they get closer to catching the killer, LaCrosse realizes that he may have to make a terrible sacrifice in order to save his son and stop the murderer from striking again.
