Upon arriving in New York, Lucky and Pop find themselves broke and unable to find work. They stumble upon a dancing school where they meet Penny, who shows them a dance routine. Lucky is initially reluctant to learn the dance, but when he discovers that Penny is an instructor at a local dance studio, he decides to take lessons in order to raise the money he needs to marry Margaret.
Penny and Lucky form a successful dance partnership and quickly become a hit at local clubs and dance halls. They perform the "Bojangles of Harlem" routine, which becomes a sensation. However, their romance is complicated by Lucky's lingering feelings for Margaret, who he initially left for Penny.
Meanwhile, Ricardo, who is also in love with Penny, refuses to play music for Lucky and Penny to dance together. Lucky eventually confesses his true feelings to Penny, and they perform the "Never Gonna Dance" routine in a poignant scene. Margaret shows up and forgives Lucky for missing their wedding, and Penny decides to leave Lucky so he can be with Margaret.
In the end, Lucky and Margaret are happily married, and Lucky visits Penny at her dance studio, where they perform one final dance together before parting ways.
