Melanie Carmichael, played by Reese Witherspoon, is a successful fashion designer in New York City and happily dating the city's most eligible bachelor, Andrew, played by Patrick Dempsey. However, when Andrew proposes to Melanie, she realizes that she needs to get a divorce from her husband Jake, played by Josh Lucas. Jake and Melanie married in high school but separated shortly after when Melanie left for New York and never returned.
Melanie returns to her hometown in Alabama to face Jake and get him to sign the divorce papers. Once back in Alabama, Melanie must navigate the relationships with her old friends and family, and confront the secrets and mistakes of her past.
As Melanie spends time back in Alabama, she rekindles her relationship with Jake, even though he is still angry with her for leaving him without explanation. Melanie also reconnects with her childhood sweetheart, Bobby Ray, played by Ethan Embry, who never left Alabama and is still living in their hometown.
Throughout the movie, Melanie must come to terms with her past mistakes and decide what will make her truly happy in life. In the end, she realizes that her heart belongs in Alabama and makes the tough decision to leave her New York life behind to start a new life with Jake and their future together.
