Sam Kelly is a hard-working man who is respected by the Indigenous community and the white settlers. He works for Fred Smith, a kind preacher who treats Sam and his wife kindly. However, tensions begin to rise when Harry March, a brash and aggressive cattle rancher, arrives in town. March is openly racist and hostile towards the Aboriginal people, and he bullies Sam and his family.
One day, March attacks Sam and tries to rape his wife. In self-defence, Sam kills March and goes into hiding with his wife in the harsh Australian wilderness. As a posse, led by Sergeant Fletcher, hunts them down, Sam and his wife must navigate the challenging terrain while trying to stay alive and avoid capture.
The film is a deeply emotional exploration of the impact of colonialism and racism on the Indigenous people of Australia. It portrays the complex relationships between white settlers and Aboriginal people, as well as the brutality and violence of Australian history. The movie was directed by Warwick Thornton and premiered at the Venice Film Festival before receiving critical acclaim worldwide.
