Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 2007 horror musical film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as the titular character, Sweeney Todd. The film is based on Stephen Sondheim's 1979 musical of the same name, which was in turn based on the 19th-century legend of Sweeney Todd, a barber who murders his customers and gives their bodies to his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett (played by Helena Bonham Carter), to be made into meat pies.
The film takes place in Victorian-era London and follows Todd's return to the city after being wrongly imprisoned for 15 years. Seeking revenge against the corrupt judge who sentenced him, Todd sets up a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett's failing pie shop and begins murdering his customers, with Mrs. Lovett using the bodies to make her pies a hit with the locals. Todd's plans are complicated when he discovers that his estranged wife is still alive and in the custody of his enemy, the judge.
The film features a dark and macabre atmosphere, with Burton's signature gothic visual style. The musical numbers, composed by Sondheim, are interspersed with gruesome scenes of murder and cannibalism. The film received critical acclaim for its performances, music, and visual design, with Depp and Bonham Carter praised for their chemistry.
