After meeting the young man, named Masaru, Suzume discovers that he is part of a secret organization called the "Guardians" who are tasked with protecting Japan from supernatural threats. Masaru reveals to Suzume that she possesses a unique ability to sense and manipulate spiritual energy, making her a potential candidate to become a Guardian herself.
However, their conversation is interrupted by the sudden appearance of a monstrous spirit that attacks them. Suzume is able to use her powers to weaken the spirit, but not before it causes mass destruction across the city.
Realizing the severity of the situation, Suzume and Masaru team up to investigate the cause of the spirit's appearance and prevent further calamities. Along the way, they encounter other Guardians with their own abilities, as well as dangerous enemies who seek to harness the power of spirits for their own gain.
As Suzume learns more about her abilities and the true nature of the Guardians, she must also come to terms with her past and the trauma of losing her mother. Together with Masaru and her newfound allies, she sets out to save Japan from the impending danger and find her own place among the Guardians.
