Suspicion is a 1941 American romantic thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine. The movie is based on the 1932 novel Before the Fact, written by Francis Iles. The film was highly acclaimed and was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Music.
The story follows Lina McLaidlaw, a young woman from a wealthy family who falls in love with Johnnie Aysgarth, a charming but irresponsible man who is known for his extravagant lifestyle and gambling debts. Despite her family's objections, Lina marries Johnnie, believing that she can change him.
As the couple settles into their married life, Lina begins to discover that Johnnie is not the man she thought he was. He is constantly short of money and disappears for days at a time. Lina also begins to suspect that Johnnie is having an affair with one of her friends.
The tension between the couple rises when Lina discovers that Johnnie has been lying to her about his business dealings. She becomes suspicious of his motives and his intentions towards her. The movie's climax takes place during a night-time drive, where Lina's suspicions seem to be confirmed when Johnnie drives recklessly, and his behaviour becomes increasingly erratic. Lina believes that he is trying to kill her, but it is revealed that he was merely trying to scare her into confessing that she had been planning to leave him.
The film's ending is ambiguous, leaving viewers uncertain whether Johnnie intended to kill Lina or not. Suspicion is a classic portrayal of domestic suspense, featuring Hitchcock's signature themes of love, betrayal, and psychological manipulation.
