In a world where surrogates are life-like robots controlled by humans, people live in their own isolated bubbles, never leaving their homes. Surrogates allow people to experience life without risk or danger, and they can customize their appearance to fit their ideal self-image.
The movie follows the story of FBI agent Tom Greer (played by Bruce Willis), who is forced to leave his home for the first time in years after the death of two surrogate controllers. He and his partner, Agent Peters, investigate the killings and soon discover that a weapon has been developed that can destroy both surrogates and their human counterparts.
As Greer delves deeper into the investigation, he encounters various people who reject surrogacy, preferring the genuine physical and emotional experiences of real life. Greer's own past trauma is also revealed, as he lost his son in an accident and subsequently retreated into the safety of his surrogate.
