Wave Riders: A Family's Wild Ride to Freedom

Documentary  N/A

The documentary Surfwise chronicles the extraordinary life of Dr. Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz and his unconventional family. Paskowitz, a Stanford-educated physician, gave up his medical career in the 1950s to pursue his passion for surfing and travel. He married Juliette, a former opera singer, and together they embarked on a nomadic lifestyle, living in an array of vehicles and traveling up and down the California coast in search of the perfect wave.

In the 1970s, the couple decided to homeschool their nine children and raise them in a small camper on the beach. The Paskowitz children were raised according to strict dietary and lifestyle rules, adhering to a primarily raw food diet and strict exercise routine. They were not allowed to watch television or interact with mainstream culture, instead spending their days surfing and learning from their parents.

Despite the challenges of their unconventional upbringing, the Paskowitz children grew up to be successful and accomplished individuals. Several became professional surfers, while others pursued careers in medicine, law, and entrepreneurship.

The documentary explores the tensions that arose within the family as the children grew older and began to question their parents' ideals. It also delves into the personal struggles of Doc and Juliette, including their failed marriage and their conflicting ideas about parenting.

Surfwise is a moving and inspiring story of a family that defied social norms and lived life on their own terms, inspiring others to march to the beat of their own drum.
