Superman is a 1978 superhero film directed by Richard Donner and starring Christopher Reeve as the iconic Man of Steel. The film marked the first major big-screen adaptation of the Superman character and has since become a beloved classic.
In the film, Clark Kent is a mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet who secretly possesses incredible powers due to his extraterrestrial origin. When the nefarious Lex Luthor (played by Gene Hackman) hatches a scheme to create a massive earthquake in California and destroy most of the United States' western coast, Clark must use his powers to stop him.
Along the way, Clark falls for his co-worker Lois Lane (played by Margot Kidder), but has to balance his growing feelings for her with his duties as Superman. He ultimately succeeds in stopping Luthor's plan, but not before a dramatic showdown with the villain and his henchmen.
Superman was a critical and commercial success upon its release, and spawned several sequels. Christopher Reeve's portrayal of the character has since become iconic, and the film is considered a classic example of the superhero genre.
