The film follows Mario Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi Mario (John Leguizamo) as they try to save Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis) from the clutches of Koopa (Dennis Hopper), the ruler of the alternate universe of Dinohattan. Koopa is seeking a powerful meteorite that allows him to merge the dimensions and rule both worlds with an iron fist.
Along the way, the brothers team up with a young street-smart girl named Daniella (Dana Kaminski) and the cyborg Toad (Mojo Nixon), who leads a resistance movement against Koopa's regime. Together, they set out to stop Koopa and his evil plans, while also trying to find their way back to their own universe.
The film features many nods to the Super Mario Bros. games, including familiar characters like Yoshi and Bob-ombs, as well as iconic elements like warp pipes and mushrooms. However, it also takes some creative liberties with the source material, giving Mario and Luigi a more grittier and urban aesthetic and fleshing out the backstory of the Mushroom Kingdom in unexpected ways.
Despite its rocky reception upon release, Super Mario Bros. has developed a cult following over the years, praised for its imaginative world-building, visual effects, and offbeat humor.
