Sundown follows the Bennetts as they vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for a week. Neil and Alice are portrayed as a loving couple, while Colin is the typical party-loving, fun-seeking teenager who is always looking to hook up with girls. Alexa, on the other hand, is presented as the mature and responsible one.
Soon after their arrival, Colin becomes smitten with a local girl named Gaby. However, his pick-up lines and charm seem to be failing and he soon realizes that Gaby is different from the typical girls he meets. Meanwhile, Alexa strikes up a friendship with a local boy named Victor, who shows her around the city and takes her to a local club where she performs a song.
Trouble begins when Uncle Zach, Neil's brother, arrives unannounced with his girlfriend, a young woman named Olivia. Uncle Zach is an alcoholic and becomes disruptive, causing friction among the family. This tension is heightened when Colin gets into trouble with a local drug dealer, who demands a large sum of money for him to be released.
The family must work together to resolve the issues that arise on their vacation, which leaves them questioning their relationships with each other. Sundown explores themes of family bonds, coming of age, and cultural exchange, all set to the backdrop of a beautiful seaside location.
