Sucker Punch is a 2011 American neo-noir action fantasy film directed by Zack Snyder and written by Snyder and Steve Shibuya. The film stars Emily Browning as “Babydoll,” a young woman who is institutionalized by her abusive stepfather after a failed attempt by Babydoll to defend her younger sister from harm.
Despite being locked away, Babydoll retreats into an alternate reality to cope with her situation. In this alternate reality, she imagines herself in a brothel where she and other young women are dancers in a cabaret show, controlled by a character named Blue. In this fantasy world, she meets a wise man known as "The Wise Man," who tells her she needs to collect five items in order to escape her captivity: a map, fire, a knife, a key, and a mystery.
She recruits her fellow dancers - Sweet Pea, Rocket, Amber, and Blondie – to help her collect the items and plan their escape. However, in order to obtain each item, they must complete a dangerous mission that requires them to fight off various enemies and monsters, using their individual strengths and skills. The missions include battling a dragon, boarding a train, and confronting giant samurai robots.
In the end, Babydoll sacrifices her own chance of freedom to help Sweet Pea escape. In the final scene, it is revealed that the “alternate reality” was actually a manifestation of Babydoll's imagination, and that her sacrifice ultimately led to her real-world escape from the mental institution.
