Bruno Stroszek is a German film directed by Werner Herzog in 1977. The film follows the story of Bruno, a recently released convict who struggles to make a living in Berlin. He is a man of simple pleasures, playing the accordion on the street, drinking and spending time with his elderly neighbor, Scheitz. Bruno soon strikes up a friendship with Eva, a prostitute who is also down on her luck. Together, they decide to leave Germany and start a new life in America.
Upon arriving in Wisconsin, Bruno and Eva are initially buoyed by the promise of a new start. However, life in America proves to be equally challenging, with the pair struggling to find work and making ends meet. They purchase a trailer home and come into possession of a bizarre collection of possessions, including a pet chicken and a robotic cow.
As the film progresses, their situation becomes increasingly desperate, with Bruno eventually resorting to desperate measures in order to make money. Eva, meanwhile, succumbs to her addiction to alcohol and eventually leaves Bruno to start a new life alone.
Stroszek is known for its surreal and bleak portrayal of the American Dream. The film received critical acclaim upon its release, winning several accolades including the Silver Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
