The man in question is named Max (played by Troy Garity) and his dog is named Scout. Max is devastated by the loss of his loyal companion and decides to honor Scout's memory by burying him in the spot where they first met in the wilderness. He enlists the help of his brother, Charlie (played by Dominic Purcell) for the journey.
During their backpacking trip, the brothers encounter a woman named Zoey (played by Nikki Reed) who is on the run from an abusive boyfriend (played by Tom Felton). Zoey's presence forces Max and Charlie to confront their own issues and relationship with each other, as well as protect Zoey from danger.
As they navigate through the treacherous terrain, they are confronted by unexpected obstacles such as extreme weather and wild animals. Eventually, they reach their destination and bury Scout, allowing Max to find closure and begin the healing process.
