Stranger Than Paradise is a black-and-white indie film directed by Jim Jarmusch. The film is divided into three parts: "The New World," "One Year Later," and "Paradise." Willie is a young Hungarian-American who wastes away his days smoking, listening to music, and watching TV with his friend Eddie. Their mundane lives are interrupted when Willie's sixteen-year-old cousin Eva comes to visit from Hungary. Initially, Eva is a nuisance to Willie and Eddie, but they eventually grow to tolerate and even enjoy her presence.
The three partake in a road trip of sorts from New York to Cleveland to Florida, living off of stolen money and eventually hitting it big in a Florida casino. However, their newfound wealth doesn't bring them happiness, and they eventually split up and go their separate ways.
The film is notable for its deadpan humor, minimalist camera work, and strong sense of atmosphere. Its portrayal of aimless youth and the search for meaning in a postmodern world has made it a cult classic. Stranger Than Paradise won the Camera d'Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
