Harold Crick (played by Will Ferrell) is a rigid and routine-oriented IRS auditor who counts his toothbrush strokes and set his watch to the exact second. One day, he starts hearing a voice narrating his life and soon discovers that he is the protagonist in a novel being written by the reclusive author Karen Eiffel (played by Emma Thompson). The voice narrating his life is actually the voice of Eiffel - a famous writer who has a reputation for killing off her protagonists in her novels.
As Harold tries to find the identity of the mysterious voice, he is introduced to Professor Jules Hilbert (played by Dustin Hoffman), a literary expert who assists Harold in his quest to understand the nature of the story and find a way to alter the ending before it is too late. Harold, at first skeptical, soon becomes convinced that the voice is real and seeks to take control of his own life.
As Harold’s relationship with the voice leads him to become involved with a free-spirited baker named Ana Pascal (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal), he must also confront the possibility of his own demise, and ultimately must decide whether to sacrifice himself for the sake of the story or find a way to change it.
Stranger Than Fiction is a unique and charming film that explores the boundaries between life and art, and the power that literature and imagination have over our lives.
