Stranger on the Third Floor is a 1940 film noir directed by Boris Ingster. The film follows newspaper reporter John McGuire (played by John McGuire) who finds himself testifying against a man accused of murder. After the man is sentenced to death, McGuire begins to have doubts about his testimony and becomes haunted by guilt.
As he struggles with his conscience, McGuire begins to experience vivid nightmares in which he is tormented by a mysterious stranger who seems to symbolize his sense of guilt. Meanwhile, two other murders occur, and McGuire becomes convinced that the real killer is still at large.
Eventually, McGuire discovers that his neighbor, an eccentric artist named Joe Briggs (played by Peter Lorre), may have been the real murderer all along. In a tense showdown, McGuire confronts Briggs in his studio and narrowly escapes with his life.
The film is considered a classic of the film noir genre, combining suspenseful storytelling with innovative visual techniques and a psychological subtext. It was originally a B-movie, but has since gained a reputation as a cult classic.
