The protagonist, DJ Williams, is played by Columbus Short. DJ is a talented street dancer from Los Angeles who becomes involved in a fight that results in his younger brother's death. As a result, DJ is sent to live with his uncle in Atlanta, where he attends Truth University.
While at Truth, DJ becomes involved with two competing fraternities, Theta Nu Theta (TNT) and Mu Gamma Xi (Xigmas), both of which are preparing for the annual National Step Show competition. DJ's unique street-style dancing makes him valuable to both teams, and he must decide which fraternity to join.
Tensions mount as DJ becomes romantically involved with April Palmer, played by Meagan Good, the girlfriend of Grant, the Xigmas' leader. Meanwhile, DJ's rival, Sylvester, played by Brian White, tricks him into being arrested and sent to jail on false charges.
In the end, DJ is released from jail in time to help TNT win the National Step Show, proving that he is a valuable member of the fraternity and a talented dancer. He also reconciles with April and exposes Sylvester's deceit, leading to his expulsion from the Xigmas and a newfound appreciation for brotherhood and loyalty.
