The movie starts with Antoine being discharged from military service. He returns to Paris, where he reunites with his sweetheart, Christine. Her father, who has grown fond of Antoine, lands him a job as a night watchman at a hotel. However, Antoine is fired from this job after falling asleep on the job.
Desperate for work, Antoine takes a job as an assistant to a private detective named Alexandre. Antoine proves to be an inept assistant, but Alexandre is a sympathetic and patient employer who teaches Antoine the art of investigation.
One day, while on the job, Antoine meets Fabienne, Alexandre's attractive and seductive wife. Antoine becomes infatuated with Fabienne and begins to pursue her, despite the fact that she is married and significantly older than him.
