Tom Witzky (played by Kevin Bacon) is a skeptical blue-collar worker who is hypnotized by his sister-in-law, Lisa (played by Illeana Douglas), during a party. Lisa suggests that Tom should be more open-minded and tells him that he should "open the door" in his mind. After the session, Tom begins experiencing vivid and disturbing visions.
Tom's visions revolve around a girl named Samantha, who appears to be a ghost. He sees her in his house, on the street, and in his dreams. Tom becomes increasingly obsessed with the girl and starts to investigate her mysterious death.
