Step Sisters is a comedy film directed by Charles Stone III and released in 2018. The movie follows Jamilah, a successful black college student who is asked to help out a group of white sorority girls after their wild party goes viral and leads to their charter being revoked. To redeem themselves, the Sigma Beta Beta (SBB) girls must compete in the Steptacular, the biggest stepping competition in the country, and they turn to Jamilah to teach them how to step.
Jamilah is initially reluctant to take on the challenge, seeing the SBBs as privileged and clueless, but she accepts the task in order to gain the recommendation letter she needs to secure her spot at Harvard Law School. Over time, she grows to bond with the SBBs and teaches them the art of stepping. At the same time, Jamilah also confronts her own prejudices and biases, and learns to let go of her perfect image and let loose a little.
As the SBBs train and prepare for the Steptacular, they face a number of challenges, from internal disagreements and rivalries to cultural misunderstandings and discrimination from other competing teams. Along the way, the girls learn about each other's backgrounds and struggles, and form a tight bond that transcends race and stereotypes. Meanwhile, Jamilah finds herself torn between her loyalty to her black sorority and her affection for the SBBs, especially its leader, Tyler.
Step Sisters features a predominantly black cast, including Megalyn Echikunwoke as Jamilah, Eden Sher as the clumsy SBB leader Tyler, and Gage Golightly, Nia Jervier, and Alessandra Torresani as the other SBB members. The film touches on themes of identity, belonging, sisterhood, and the stereotypes and expectations placed on black and white women in college environments. It received mixed reviews from critics, with some applauding its humor and heart, and others criticizing it for stereotyping both black and white characters.
