Unmasked: The FBI's War on Dissent

Drama  United States of America

Steal This Movie is a biographical film about the life of Abbie Hoffman, who was a political activist and one of the founders of the Youth International Party (Yippies). The movie covers the period from the 1960s to the 1970s, and features key events in Hoffman's life, including his involvement in anti-war protests and his 1968 appearance on The Dick Cavett Show.

In 1973, Hoffman goes underground to avoid a prison sentence related to drug charges. While in hiding, he contacts a reporter named Jerry Rubin and provides him with information about the FBI's covert surveillance and harassment of political activists and organizations. The film portrays how the FBI used illegal tactics such as wiretapping and infiltrating organizations to incite violence and blame it on the Left.

The movie also follows the relationship between Hoffman and his wife, Anita, and the challenges they face as a result of his political activism. It highlights the tensions within the Yippie movement and their disagreements with more mainstream leftist organizations.

Steal This Movie features an ensemble cast including Vincent D'Onofrio as Abbie Hoffman, Janeane Garofalo as Anita Hoffman, and Jeanne Tripplehorn as Jerry Rubin. It received mixed reviews upon its release in 2000 but was praised for its accuracy in portraying Hoffman's life and activism.
