State of Grace is a crime drama film directed by Phil Joanou and starring Sean Penn, Gary Oldman, and Ed Harris, among others. Upon returning to his old neighborhood, Hell's Kitchen, Terry Noonan (Sean Penn) reunites with his childhood friend Jackie Flannery (Gary Oldman), who is now involved with the Irish mob run by his older brother, Frankie (Ed Harris). Terry is soon pulled back into the seedy underworld of the Irish-American gangs of New York, leading him to love, friendship, and betrayal. He also rekindles a romance with Kathleen Flannery (Robin Wright), Jackie's younger sister, who he once had feelings for.

As Terry becomes more involved in the Flannery crime family, he begins to question his loyalties and his own identity. He seeks guidance from another childhood friend, Stevie McGuire (John C. Reilly), who is now a cop. As tensions rise between the Irish mob and the Italian mafia, Terry finds himself caught between his loyalty to his friends and his loyalties to the police force.

State of Grace features powerful performances, particularly from Penn and Oldman, who portray complex and often violent characters in turmoil. The film's atmospheric cinematography, haunting score, and stark depiction of New York City's underworld all combine to create a gritty and compelling drama.
