State Fair tells the story of the Frake family, who travel to the Iowa State Fair to showcase their prize hog and pies. The family includes Abel Frake, his wife Melissa, their son Wayne and daughter Margy. Wayne is interested in winning a blue ribbon for his hog, but Margy is more interested in finding love.
At the fair, Margy meets Pat, a newspaper reporter who is covering the event. The two develop a romance and spend time together on the midway. Meanwhile, Wayne falls for a singer named Emily and begins a relationship with her.
As the days go by, the Frake family competes in various events and enjoys the carnival attractions. But when a storm threatens to ruin the fair, Abel and a group of farmers work together to save their livestock and crops.
In the end, Margy and Pat decide to pursue a future together, and Wayne realizes that his true love is his home and family. The Frakes leave the fair with memories of their time together and the hope of returning the following year.
