In Stargate, the interstellar teleportation device is discovered by Dr. Daniel Jackson, a linguist who is hired by the military to decipher the hieroglyphs on the device. With the help of the device, a team led by Colonel Jack O'Neil is transported to the distant planet where they encounter humans resembling ancient Egyptians.
Upon arriving on the planet, the team discovers that these humans are being enslaved by a powerful alien named Ra, who has taken on the persona of the ancient Egyptian god of the sun. Ra uses advanced technology to keep the humans under his control and has been using the Stargate to travel to Earth and take humans as slaves for thousands of years.
As the team begins to work with the enslaved humans to overthrow Ra, they discover that there is a rebellion brewing and that many of the humans are ready to fight back. However, the team also realizes that they must destroy Ra's advanced technology in order to truly free the humans and prevent Ra from returning to Earth.
In a climactic battle, the team is able to destroy Ra's technology and defeat his forces, freeing the enslaved humans and preventing Ra from returning to Earth. They return home through the Stargate, with Dr. Jackson deciding to stay on the alien planet to learn more about its culture and people. The film ends with the possibility that there are many more Stargates scattered across the galaxy, leading to a sequel and a long-running television series.
