The mysterious alien presence that is destroying Earth is revealed to be a probe sent by an extinct civilization searching for humpback whales, which they believe will be able to communicate with them and save their species. In the future, whales are extinct, so Kirk and his crew travel back in time to the 1980s to find a pair of humpback whales and bring them to the future.
Once in the past, the crew must adapt to the culture and technology of the time, including using pay phones and navigating the busy streets of San Francisco. They are aided by a marine biologist named Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks), who becomes romantically involved with Kirk.
The crew successfully acquire the whales, but encounter multiple obstacles including a confrontation with a group of whale hunters and a crash landing of their stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey. They eventually return to the future with the whales and use them to communicate with the probe, saving Earth from destruction.
The film features a lighthearted tone and comedic moments, with the crew struggling to understand and adapt to 20th century Earth. It also delivers a message about conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species.
