Stake Land is a post-apocalyptic horror movie directed by Jim Mickle. The story centers around Martin (Connor Paolo), a teenage boy whose family is killed by vampires during the collapse of the US economy and political system. He is saved from the creatures by Mister (Nick Damici), a ruthless vampire hunter who takes Martin under his protection.
As they travel north to Canada, the last remaining safe haven on the continent, the duo encounters a variety of characters, some helpful and others not so much. They encounter a pregnant young woman, a group of religious fanatics who believe the vampire plague is God's punishment, and cannibalistic survivors who prey on their fellow humans.
The pair also face danger from the vampires themselves, who have evolved into vicious, almost animalistic creatures that are impervious to sunlight and require a wooden stake through the heart to kill. Throughout the movie, Martin learns how to fight and protect himself as Mister's protege.
But their journey is not without challenges as Mister has a personal vendetta against a powerful vampire named Jebediah (Michael Cerveris) who killed his own family. The movie builds up to a climactic battle between Mister and Jebediah as Martin looks on.
Stake Land is a gory, violent film with a strong emphasis on character development and relationships. It explores themes of survival, loyalty, and redemption in a bleak, unforgiving world overrun by monsters.
