After the death of her estranged gay son, conservative choir director Maybelline (played by Jacki Weaver) inherits his drag club in San Francisco. Initially, she is shocked and overwhelmed by the flamboyant performers and their bold lifestyles. However, Maybelline soon learns to embrace the community and work to keep the club afloat.

Along the way, Maybelline learns more about her son's life and struggles as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. She also develops relationships with the performers, including the club's headliner, a talented but troubled drag queen named Joan (played by Adrian Grenier).

As Maybelline navigates her new role as club owner and surrogate mother to the performers, she faces challenges from her conservative former church community and local law enforcement. She also struggles to reconcile her own views with the values and beliefs of the people she has come to care for.

The film takes a lighthearted approach to its subject matter, mixing comedic moments with more serious themes. It also features a strong soundtrack of classic drag and karaoke songs.
